Keanu Reeves is no stranger to the world of publishing; in fact, he’s one of the owners of a small art book press. But given that Reeves’s career as an actor has included everything from wry comedies to gloriously bizarre action films, one might also surmise that his literary tastes are similarly broad. All of which is a roundabout way of saying that the news that Reeves is set to make his debut as a writer of comic books isn’t the most shocking pieces of information ever.
At USA Today, Brian Truitt has more information on the actor’s first time working on a comic book. The 12-issue limited series BRZRKR will debut in October from publisher Boom! Studios. Reeves created the concept and is co-writing it with Matt Kindt, whose work has included acclaimed comics like Mind Mgmt and Pistolwhip. Handling the artwork is Alessandro Vitti.
Truitt’s article notes that the project began with Reeves aiming to develop a project that could translate into something for the screen:
Last year, Reeves met with Boom! about creating material for live-action vehicles, and he pitched them on “this character who was born 80,000 years ago, half man, his father’s a war god. It’s a little fantasy in reality,” Reeves says. “I had this image in my head of a guy fighting through the ages because of his father’s compulsion to violence,” but with the pathos of a man “trapped and trying to figure it out.”
Reeves and Kindt have been collaborating via Skype, as the former is currently in Berlin for the fourth Matrix film. The first issue of BRZRKR is set for release on October 7. Then, readers will get to see for themselves how Reeves’s adventures on the page compare to his big-screen work.
