Common knowledge will tell you water and electricity don’t mix.
Swimming during a thunderstorm, for example, might be the dumbest thing you can do.
But driving a Tesla Model S in a thunderstorm? Different story.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk — who is no stranger to the dream of underwater cars — revealed this weekend that the Tesla Model S actually has a bit of a shocking feature built into it:
We *def* don’t recommended this, but Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods of time. Thrust via wheel rotation.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 19, 2016
The tweet comes in response to a video posted online of a Tesla Model S swimming through a flooded tunnel in Russia.
How do you explain an electric car being able to walk on water? No internal combustion, for one. And, noted by Musk, the drive units and batteries are sealed, with the thrust coming from the car’s wheel rotation.
Y’know, common knowledge stuff.
