Electric cars don’t burn fossil fuels, but they do use up two other valuable resources: time and money.
Realizing that the cost of an electric car and the time it takes to charge one could be deal breakers for buyers, Volkswagen engineers designed a solution that’ll debut next month.
Not only will the new electric vehicle have a 310-mile range, it will also be able to charge in 15 minutes and be priced lower than a gas model, a company chairman told Wirstschafts Woche.
The all-electric car — which could begin production as soon as 2018 — will supposedly be about the size of a VW Golf but have same amount of interior space as a roomier Passat.
While other specific details about the concept model have yet to be released, a senior VW engineer said the car’s “cutting-edge technology” would definitely “make a huge statement” when the world gets a look at it during the Paris Motor Show.
Volkswagen execs are hoping that statement will make people forget the company’s emissions scandal. “We are using the current crisis to fundamentally realign the group,” CEO Matthias Müller told Autocar. “I feel we now have the chance to build a new and better Volkswagen.”
