In 1969, if there was a mid-engine automotive equivalent to Helen of Troy, it would have been the Lamborghini Miura, hands down.
But if you were sharp and attentive, you would have gone for its lesser known friend, the De Tomaso Mangusta. More obscure but still immaculate in its design, they would both go on to fuel the future of “the supercar.”
And if you missed your chance to score one, fear not: it has risen once again.
This ‘69 Mangusta, with just 2,900 miles on the odometer, is quite the collector’s find. Its sensuous lines designed by the prolific Giorgetto Giugiaro conceal a banging Ford 302 cubic inch/5.0 liter V8 engine generating 221 horsepower.
Just 401 Mangustas were built, with around 250 still on the streets today. In almost completely original condition — save a high-quality $60k repaint job to return it to the original Silver Blue Metallic livery — this particular make is a rare gem.
And at $375k, it’s a steal for anyone with a more refined eye. Think of it as an off-the-menu piece of sportscar history.
