It’s got to feel damn good to be Elon Musk.
Because sure, he disrupted an otherwise blasse and unchanging car market. And he gets to say chippy things like his “solar shingles will cost less than a dumb roof.” But also he gets to blow the doors off of ‘em all.
The Tesla Model S P100D is officially the fastest accelerating production car to date. And it gets better. This outrageous jump-off is due to something called a “Spaceballs-inspired software update.”
Besting the 0-60 mph in 2.3 second record, in a Motor Trend test, the Model S P100D bolted 0-60 in 2.275507139. More than fast, that’s a helluva a lot faster than the 2.5 seconds that Tesla promised.
It’s still not supercar status, what with makes like the LaFerrari clocking 70 mph with a tenth of a second shaved off, and the Porsche 918 and McLaren P1 reaching 80 mph in an equivalent time.
And it’s kinda jerky. As in: “Launching a Model S P100D (weighing 5,062 with gear and driver) in full-on Ludicrous Easter-egg mode snaps your body in a manner that is utterly impossible to replicate in any other street-legal production car on normal tires and dry asphalt at a mid-$100,000 price point,” Motor Trend said.
And if that doesn’t blow your hair back enough. After seeing the numbers, Musk claims the S P100D could jet even faster if you remove the floor mats and front trunk liner.
