Forget personal jetpacks. We’ll take a flying all-terrain dune buggy.
Finally on sale today for $139,000 (and after much previous hype), the SkyRunner is an FAA-approved, two-seat offroading aircraft. Translation: on land, the vehicle can navigate the worst terrain and then literally fly over it. The hybrid machine can hit 40 MPH in the air for up to 120 nautical miles, taking off with just 450 feet of clear land.
Done flying? The wing of the craft folds up into a bag that fits behind the rear passenger seat.
Overall, this is a lightweight, powerful beast of a machine, crafted from a mix of carbon fiber, Maxxis Bighorn tires and FOX Piggyback shocks.
“We set out to build the ultimate adventure vehicle but have since discovered it fills tremendous gaps as a tool,” said SkyRunner CEO Stewart Hamel in a press release. “Designed initially as a toy, the market has translated SkyRunner to be a low cost, high utility multimodal tool for ranchers, law enforcement, border security, and even department of defense agencies. With operating costs of approximately $50 an hour, SkyRunner will take you places no pickup truck or UTV can go and at a fraction of the cost of a helicopter.”
The SkyRunner only takes about 12 hours of flight training to operate, and pilots can legally use 98 percent of U.S. airspace, with no air traffic controller approval necessary.
