Now our two favorite subspecies of camping trailer have joined forces: the newest model from Safari Condo is a classic teardrop with a patented retractable roof.
The models in the Alto R line fit inside most regular garages in their compact form, but offer more than seven feet of vertical space when distended. Towable by sedans, wagons and small SUVs, the Alto R — available in two sizes — is made of streamlined aluminum and has a weld-free frame that Safari Condo says makes its aerodynamic drag coefficient 75% lower than that of a traditional travel trailer in carriage.
Among the interior appointments: a kitchenette, fixed-flush toilet and multiple beds, along with tempered glass windows that can flood it with light when the roof is electronically raised. Priced around $30k, Alto R models include a two-year warranty and are sold from the factory.
