Time to take it out for a ride … on your wrist.
REC Watches, a Copenhagen-based horologist that crafts timepieces inspired by iconic cars, just launched The 901 Automatic, a new timepiece made from salvaged and recycled Porsche 911s.
First off: It’s 901 because that’s what the car was originally called before its 1964 launch. It is worth mentioning that when we spoke to REC, they did want us to note that they are “not in any way associated or supported by Porsche AG or any of its affiliates”
Either way, the watch captures the essence of the 911 via several design references (e.g. the crown mirrors the horn cap of early 911 steering wheels), as well as dials crafted from the bodywork of recovered Porsche 911 parts.
As for the specs: The watch features a sapphire crystal glass with three layers of anti-reflective coating, wrapped in a 44mm stainless steel case with a transparent caseback (where the rotor is decorated to resemble the 911’s drilled brake discs). It’s fastened to your wrist via double calf leather straps.
The face of the 901 showcases five functions: time, day, date, month and power reserve, and nods design-wise to the classic Porsche 911 dashboard.
