Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer Gerry McGovern sauntered onto the stage of L.A. Auto Show event earlier this week wearing a bright blue sportcoat, a dress shirt open at least three buttons down and an ascot.
We believe this is what the Brits refer to as “swagger.”
Toward the end of his dog-and-pony show, he said about the company’s flagship Range Rover: “Our customers tell us, don’t change anything, just make it better. And we have.”
At first it sounds cocky, but when you look at the 2018 Range Rover SV Autobiography, you’ll notice the body hasn’t really changed. It has a longer wheelbase, so it’s roomier, and there’s a new plug-in option to account for changing climes, er, times. The inside, however, if full of upgrades — especially for those in the backseat.
The finishes are on par with what you’d find in a private jet: premium leather, wood, ergonomic dials. But the real magic is in those spiffy captain chairs that recline 40 degrees, feature 22 discrete adjustment settings and can even give you a hot-stone massage. Each sits adjacent its own high-definition screen, there’s 4G Wifi, and between them you’ll find a mini fridge that can store four 600ml bottles. Oh, and don’t forget the foot rests.
“You could live back here, and I’m sure some people will,” said McGovern.
