Porsche’s 917 journey to the peak of racing didn’t begin with a step; it began with a prototype
Which so happens to be this one … and you can buy it.
In 1970, Porsche created a prototype 917 model (chassis no. 917/10-001) that allowed the German automaker to secure its first overall victory at Le Mans. The car went on to be called the “greatest racing car of the 20th century.”
Improved upon over the course of a 16-month development process that included wind tunnel trials, multiple engine changes and five different body designs, this restored version of the original 917 is presented as a “point-in-time” model and has a 12-cylinder boxer racing engine.
That puppy is good for about 630 ponies of power and just as many daily envious head turns.
“With a known history from new, this important Porsche 917/10 prototype would be an ideal weapon with which to contest prestigious vintage endurance racing events,” Sotheby’s says.
The car is expected to fetch $5.5 million, so those racing events better pay out large purses.
Or at least validate parking.
