If doing 0-60 in 3.4 seconds in an electric car with a top speed of 186 MPH interests you, it’s time to rejoice. Because Pininfarina’s hydrogen-powered concept car is no longer just hot air.
After first revealing the H2 Speed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March and taking home the Concept Award, the Italian design house’s CEO has confirmed it will actually build the cars. While speaking with the Automotive News at the 2016 Concours d’Elegance, CEO Silvio Pietro Angori said Pininfarina will produce a limited run of 10 of the track-only hydrogen supercars.
The 503-HP H2 Speeds will use the chassis of a Le Mans Prototype 2 racing model as a base and rely on a pair of electric motors that draw their power from hydrogen fuel cells for speed. Pininfarina — which already has buyers lined up for the H2s — expects to have a prototype model up and running by early 2017 and production models done by the end of next summer.
Angori called the $2.5 million vehicles the “racing car for gentleman drivers” and said they are the type of zero-emissions product that the company will be focusing on in the future. “That is the exemplification of what we intend to do going forward,” Angori told the Automotive News.
