Off-roading was not intended to be a sport for luxury.
But Mercedes engineer Jürgen Eberle decided to throw out the playbook when designing the all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² Luxury Wagon. It takes its cues from the standard All-Terrain, which here meant a very literal interpretation of the word “all.”
Under the hood, the Wagon is packing a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 capable of 328 horsepower from the E400 wagon. But it’s not like any other wagon out there courtesy of a portal axle setup.
When Eberle came out of the lab, this piece of madness had carbon fiber flared fenders, body cladding, 16-inches of ground clearance, an additional eight inches of width and 31-inch tires. That’s more clearance than a Humvee, for the record. But all of this is going to give the driver the power and stability of a Jeep Wrangler.
A one-off concept for now, there’s no word if the 4×4 will go into production. But the response so far has been for the most part positive. And given Benz’s history of releasing limited-edition runs of offbeat models, it’s not unheard of that this weird grocery-getter might very well see the light of day.
