If you’ve taken even a cursory introduction to Greek mythology, you probably know Icarus, the disobedient son who flew too close to the sun and paid the ultimate price for it.
Expected a batter fate with Alu-Cab’s Icarus, a retrofitted Land Rover Defender with a rooftop that elevates (toward the sun, natch) to reveal a hidden two-person cartop tent.
The South African aftermarket company really went all out with their latest mod, adding solar panels, LEDs, a fold-away stove with storage space, and tons of other survival doodads. But it’s the retractable, lightweight roof that makes this thing a winner. The rust-resistant awning makes setting up a roof tent a snap (from experience, I can tell you that task is usually a massive pain in the ass) and also provides a porch-like perch for taking in sunrises and sunsets.
Just remember to pack some sunblock, lest you end up like Icarus.
