Land Rover Confirms the New Defender Is Coming in 2019

For Christmas, they’ve gifted us a few cryptic details

Let me guess: Your office Secret Santa was a bust and your Christmas list has a snowball’s chance in hell of being fulfilled? Have no fear, Land Rover is here with the only gift that truly matters.

This morning, the automaker confirmed that the new Defender is coming in 2019. (That’s your cue, Tiny Tim! “God bless us, every one.”)

The details are otherwise maddeningly sparse, as the announcement comes via a single image emailed to the media, which you’ll find below.

Yup, that’s a blurry spy shot of the new Land Rover Defender. But there are a few things we can infer. Despite the previous claim the vehicle would not be “retro,” it appears they’ve kept it boxy enough that we won’t have to stage a mutiny. Unlike the official spy shots released earlier this year, the spare tire will be affixed to the rear. And because the image reads “do not unwrap until 2019,” we can expect that the cryptic December 27th date noted means we will be getting new photos after Christmas — but they’ll be similarly camouflaged.

Nonetheless, as The Drive writes, we can expect this dispatch to mean the Defender will be fully revealed in 2019 with a model year of 2020. But let’s all plan to meet back here on the 27th to see what else they’ve got in store.
