Back in January, we reported on Ford’s announcement of the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500. The company claimed it is “the most powerful street-legal Ford ever.” The only problem? They didn’t offer any real performance numbers to back it up.
Today, a long five months later, we’ve finally got ‘em. In what might be the shortest press release of all time, Ford unveiled what the new Mustang will be packing: “The all-new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 will produce 760 horsepower and 625 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful street-legal Ford ever — with the most power- and torque-dense supercharged production V8 engine in the world.”
Oh, and they end it with some sass: “Enough said.” [Cue the red, white and blue fireworks.]
If you’re not a gearhead, Carscoops offers some comparisons to show why this is such a big deal. It’s more powerful than the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat (up to 717 horsepower), the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (650 horsepower) and even “one of the most coveted modern supercars,” the McLaren 720S (710 horsepower and 568 lb.-ft. of torque).
That McLaren will set you back over $280K. On the other hand, the new, more powerful Mustang — while pricing hasn’t been released — will start somewhere not too far north of the 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350’s $59K price tag.
Be on the lookout for more details soon as the Mustang is slated for a fall release.
