As long as the classics remain the classics, we’re going to get modern versions of them. Case in point: Romeo and Juliet in contemporary dress is back for Hot Vax Summer, and Joel Coen’s black-and-white Macbeth starring Denzel Washington is on the way. If someone’s ready to take another crack at The Three Musketeers a decade after Paul W. S. Anderson’s misfire, at least they won’t have to figure out a vehicle for the villain, because Drake just built one.
Of course, Drake makes music, he doesn’t build cars, but he teamed up with luxury brand Chrome Hearts on a custom Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and as GQ shows in its exclusive feature with photos, it’s a fleur-de-lis-festooned doozy.
“The car itself is the result of over a year of work between Chrome Hearts and Drake, and the crown jewel of an album rollout with no real precedent,” the magazine wrote, alluding to Drake’s delayed project Certified Lover Boy. We’ve previously detailed the ludicrous lengths Rolls-Royce goes to in search of a perfect automotive experience, but how did the mere act of customizing one take more than 12 months?
One look inside and it becomes abundantly clear. The interior has been completely overrun with quilted leather, some traditional, some featuring Chrome Hearts’ signature crosses and the backseat prominently displaying a fleur-de-lis. (Can anyone else picture Drake planning a duel with d’Artagnan in the back or is that just me?) That’s not to say the exterior was neglected; not only are there custom wheels carrying this chariot, the rims are engraved with the words “Fuck You.”
As Chrome Hearts co-owner Laurie Lynn Stark told GQ, Drake “hasn’t been able to drive the car for over a year because the minute it’s on the road it’s photographed.”
Ah, now the rims make a lot more sense.
