Earlier this year came the news that Cadillac was ahead of schedule on the Lyriq, the SUV that marks Cadillac’s first foray into the world of electric vehicles. Now, the storied automaker has announced another, the Celestiq — though there currently aren’t plans to bring this to production. Instead, as Autoblog’s article on the announcement reveals, it exists as a demonstration of what design features Cadillac plans to bring to the EV market.

Cadillac Advanced Design manager Magalie Debellis described the Celestiq as “the purest expression of Cadillac,” and spoke about “[bringing] to life the most integrated expressions of design and innovation in the brand’s history” in a statement.

That nod to Cadillac’s history goes depeer than you’d expect, with the design team citing the 1957 Eldorado Brougham and pre-war coaches as two touchstones in creating the look and feel of the Celestiq. Of particular interest is the ability to have four distinct zones of lighting coming from the roof, which has countless applications depending on how the sedan is used.

As is the case with the Lyriq, the Celestiq will utilize GM’s new Ultium battery system. It’s one of several examples of 21st-century technology used on the sedan; there will also be five LED displays and a passenger-side entertainment display that won’t be visible for the driver.

While this version of the Celestiq is a show car, the announcement suggests that details on a production version will be revealed later in 2022. It’s an intriguing step forward for Cadillac.
