Late last year, Bugatti announced the Bolide concept hypercar, an impressive feat of engineering designed to utilize the full capacity of the automaker’s W-16 engine. (And pay homage to Chuck Yeager’s Bell X-1 because…why not, really?) Writing at Car and Driver, Conor Hoffman dubbed it “a flex to show what the French automaker can do” with the engine in question. The article also included a quote from Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann, who dubbed the concept car “the ultimate Bugatti.”
What could make the Bolide even more ultimate? Perhaps a production run. And now, Bugatti has announced that it’s doing just that, via an announcement made at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.
At Road & Track, Fred Smith has more details on the launch. The production version of the Bolide is slated to be complete in 2024, with a very limited run of 40 made. The cost? $4.7 million apiece. Smith notes that the production version of the Bolide will be slightly less powerful than the concept iteration — 1550 horsepower as opposed to 1800. The difference has to do with fuel — the concept car was designed to use 110 octane racing fuel, while the production version makes do with 93 octane.
“For me, being able to turn the radical thought experiment of the Bolide into reality as a production vehicle is a dream come true as it is by far the most challenging project of my 17-year Bugatti career,” said Achim Anscheidt, the automaker’s design director. Forty eager drivers will know just how well that adaptation went before long.
