Say it’s Sunday morning and you feel like stealing a car. Here is what not to do.
Step 1: Do not pick the most tech-savvy BMW on the block.
Step 2: Do not drive the car a short distance and then decide to take a nap in the car with the engine running.
Which really did happen. Let this moron be your example.
Recently, a Seattle-area BMW 550i was stolen from the just-married owner’s parking garage. Apparently, a friend had borrowed the luxury sedan and left the key fob inside. Upon being contacted by the owner, the police immediately tapped BMW Corporate. The team there then located the joy ride and locked it remotely. Giving the police time to then descend upon the vehicle to find — yes, for real — the crook sleeping, trapped inside.
Jonah Spangenthal-Lee, Deputy Director of Communications for the Seattle Police Department, wrote of the incident: “BMW employees were able to remotely lock the car’s doors, trapping the suspect inside, presumably while hissing something terrifying like ‘I’m not locked in here with you, you‘re locked in here with me‘ into the car’s sound system,” Spangenthal-Lee wrote. And if you’re wondering, yes, that’s a line from Watchmen.
Step 3: Or just don’t steal cars.
It’s harder every day and, moreover, a fairly sh*tty thing to do.
