BMW Just Up and Reinvented the Motorcycle

The days of TRON are closer than we thought

If BMW’s vision for the future of motorcycles is any indication, the days of riding TRON bikes could be much closer at hand than any of us could have imagined.

The self-balancing Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 will provide its riders with an “analog experience in a digital age” by connecting with them in ways that weren’t possible in the past. Incorporating elements of BMW’s very first bike from 1923, the concept’s singular Flexframe extends from front to rear wheel and can be completely readjusted via some switchwork on the handlebars.

Though the bike’s powertrain resembles a traditional BMW boxer engine, it’s really an aluminum zero-emissions drive unit that shifts aerodynamically based on how the Motorrad is being used. In order to free riders from the need to wear helmets and protective clothing, the futuristic ride comes with an optically controlled visor that displays safety information and road conditions, as well as a riding suit that warms or cools its rider and delivers navigation tips via vibration.

While rider and bike stay connected digitally at all times, the Motorrad knows when to go silent.

“A key point with the Motorrad was to make sure the constant digital presence doesn’t undermine the analog riding experience,” explained BMW experience head Holger Hampf. “The display and operating concept works so subtly that the rider can enjoy an entirely natural biking experience, trusting the bike completely and enjoying complete freedom and ease.”

If this is getting you a little excited, watch this video and take it easy, rider.
