The adage about the whole being greater than the sum of its parts applies to the automotive industry as well as anything. You should never buy a car based on the horsepower or torque alone, no matter how impressive. But what about a car that holds the record for fastest convertible roof? That’s … something we’ve never heard before.
You can thank Aston Martin for bringing that neglected spec to the forefront with its new Vantage Roadster, which was unveiled this week. It’s the convertible companion to the Vantage Coupe, but instead of relying on pedestrian specs like speed (190 MPH maximum) or 0 to 60 time (3.7 seconds) to set it apart, the marque made it clear that while other convertibles take forever to retract their roofs (a travesty!), the Vantage Roadster has the fastest “fully automatic automotive convertible roof” on the market.
How fast are we talking? According to Aston Martin, the fabric hood can be lowered in 6.7 seconds and raised in 6.8 seconds with a top speed of 31 MPH. Check it out in action below:
OK, sure, it’s a little underwhelming because it’s just a bunch of fabric folding up, but still! In a crowded luxury sports car market, companies will do anything to stand out, and Aston Martin can’t be knocked for trying. After all, it needs to pull out all the stops to stay afloat.
You can read more about the Vantage Roadster here. In the U.S., it will start at $161K, and deliveries are set to begin between April and June 2020. When you pull up to the cars and coffee meetup in this, go ahead and say you’ve got the fastest car in the world — no need to mention you’re talking about the roof.
