Welcome to Culture Hound, InsideHook’s deep dive into the month’s most important cultural happenings, pop and otherwise.
WATCH: Cha Cha Real Smooth
Cooper Raiff’s Shithouse was an excellent but overlooked indie comedy-drama about college loneliness. The twentysomething actor/director returns for a well-received encore in this story of a Bar Mitzvah party host. (6/17, Apple TV+)
More new films coming to the small screen and big: Fire Island (6/3, Hulu); The Score (6/3, theaters/VOD); Crimes of the Future (6/3, theaters); Watcher (6/3, theaters); Hustle (6/8, Netflix); Jurassic World Dominion (6/10, theaters); Lightyear (6/17, theaters); Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (6/17, Hulu); Jerry and Marge Go Large (6/17, Paramount+); Spiderhead (6/17, Netflix); Flux Gourmet (6/24, theaters/VOD); Elvis (6/24, theaters); The Black Phone (6/24, theaters)
WELCOME BACK: The Boys
It’s the anti-Marvel. Season three of this pitch-black satire of superheroes includes an adaptation of the comic book’s debaucherous “Herogasm” storyline, along with Butcher (Karl Urban) briefly gaining powers — which may result in an all-out bloodbath with the not-so-heroic supes in the Seven. Based on the trailer, the show’s Superman parody, Homelander, has an apparent new kink: Milking cows.
More returning TV series: For All Mankind (6/10, Apple TV+); Peaky Blinders (6/10, Netflix); The Umbrella Academy (6/22, Netflix); Westworld (6/24, HBO); Only Murders in the Building (6/28, Hulu)
STUDY: The Janes
A documentary about the “Janes” who made up the underground network of women in Chicago in the late 60s and early 70s who risked their personal and professional lives to support women with unwanted pregnancies in the pre-Roe v. Wade era. (6/8, HBO)
More new documentaries and specials: South Park: The Streaming Wars (6/1, Paramount+); 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards (6/5, MTV); A Tribute to Bob Saget (6/10, Netflix); Amy Schumer’s Parental Advisory (6/11, Netflix); The 75th Annual Tony Awards (6/12, CBS)
BINGE: That’s My Time With David Letterman
The talk show legend started out as a stand-up; here, David Letterman invites big-name comics to perform a set and then sit down for a longer chat. (6/7, Netflix)
More new series: This Is Going to Hurt (6/2, AMC+); Irma Vep (6/6, HBO); Ms. Marvel (6/8, Disney+); Queer as Folk (6/9, Peacock); Dark Winds (6/12, AMC); The Old Man (6/16, FX); Players (6/17, Paramount+); The Lake (6/17, Prime Video)
READ: The Twilight World
Filmmaker Werner Herzog bases his first novel on the true story of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who defended a small island in the Philippines for twenty-nine years after the end of World War II. This take, however, is “part documentary, part poem and part dream,” so don’t expect a straightforward retelling. (6/14)
More new books: Rickey: The Life and Legend of an American Original by Howard Bryant (6/7); Tracy Flick Can’t Win by Tom Perrotta (6/7); Meet Me by the Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall by Alexandra Lange (6/14); Horse by Geraldine Brooks (6/14)
LISTEN: Prince and the Revolution
This Live box set captures Prince and his band during a legendary 1985 performance (during the Purple Rain tour). While available before, this reconfigured and remixed set is now on Blu-Ray and the audio is now available separately; plus, the album comes with a new photo book from the tour. (6/3)
More new music: (6/3) Andrew Bird; The Chainsmokers; Angel Olsen; Post Malone (6/10) Vance Joy (6/17) FOALS (6/24) Coheed and Cambria; Jack Johnson; Soccer Mommy; Regina Spektor; Lupe Fiasco; Tim Heidecker
