Fans of Showtime's 'Dexter' Don't Have to Kill to Acquire the Show's Props

If you were a loyal fan of Showtime’s eight-season serial-killer epic, Dexter, you’ll know that the show saw its share of name actors. Besides the main cast, which included Michael C. Hall (who won a Golden Globe for his turn as the title slasher) and Jennifer Carpenter as his sister Debra (Hall’s real-life wife at the time), the show featured recurring roles by John Lithgow (who also won a Golden Globe for his role), Colin Hanks, Edward James Olmos, Jimmy Smits, Yaslin Bey (a.k.a. rapper Mos Def), and Yvonne Strahovski.

Although the show lost its narrative direction by the final season, it still remains one of the better cable thrillers of the aughts—and one definitely worth a future binge-watching session on Netflix (after you get through Stranger Things and Narcos).

What better way to honor the show’s enduring legacy than with a full-series auction? Los Angeles–based Prop Store—which specializes in film and television prop and memorabilia auctions—will be auctioning off items from a number of the show’s seasons (and worn by many of its characters) from November 21 to December 9.

Take a look at some of the pieces below, along with a short explanation about why they’re significant in the series. (There’s one very minor spoiler below.)

All Seasons – Dexter’s Kill Room Plastic Sheeting

Without giving too much of the show’s plot away, Dexter Morgan is a serial killer who kills other serial killers. His own routine involves setting up elaborate “kill rooms,” where he taunts his victims. The key to his hermetically sealed kill room? Plastic sheeting everywhere to catch all the blood, of course. (On this prop, you can still see the remains of a particularly spatter-heavy kill.)

This outfit—the olive-green shirt (you can see it just peeking out on the mannequin), lime-green coveralls, and black apron and boots—came to symbolize Dexter’s dark side (or what he referred to as his “dark passenger”). When viewers saw him don the garb, they knew it was slashing time. (It also became a popular Halloween costume after the first few seasons.) This is a must-have for any true Dexter superfan.

Mild Spoiler Alert: In the Season 3 finale, Dexter and his girlfriend Rita Bennett (Julie Benz), a woman who’s been the victim of an abusive ex-husband, tie the knot. This is the outfit Dexter wore at the altar—and we’re not going to mention what kind of bloodstains it had on it after his wedding night. Where would the fun be in that?

Season 6, Episode 6, “Just Let Go” – Travis Marshall’s Branding Iron

Travis Marshall will probably go down as the creepiest role in good-guy Colin Hanks’ entire career (yes, he’s über-good-guy Tom’s son). During Season 6, Travis, a serial killer who branded his victims, was mercilessly trailed by Dexter until the two had a monumental showdown.

You’ve probably heard of Shepard Fairey by now. The street artist’s work has become a prized (and expensive) fixture on the international auction scene. This limited-edition poster Fairey made specifically for the Showtime show is signed by the artist, and should garner some dollar signs before the auction’s conclusion.
