DJ Skee Wants You to Buy His Sneakers, With a Little Help From eBay

Sure, maybe you’ve bought kicks resale before. But have you tried to cop a pair from a man whose sneaker collection has been valued at over $1 million dollars? Well, now you have the chance. eBay is teaming up with a host of the most prominent sneaker collectors in the game, including the infamous connoisseur DJ Skee, for “The Sleigh Drop” — a curated, exclusive sneaker sale offering insider access to elite collections of kicks.

“The Sleigh Drop” taps DJ Skee, La La Anthony, and Jacques Slade for weekly drops dipping into their personal archives, starting November 5 and running through December. Skee’s collection (he wears size 11 and 12, for all those on the edge of their seats) is on the docket first, with more than 700 pairs of limited-edition, rare, or otherwise hot footwear releasing every Friday through the end of the month.

The campaign comes as the holiday season ramps up and eBay looks to give back to its patrons. “Sneaker collecting is all about community, and eBay always puts its community of buyers and sellers first,” said Garry Thaniel, General Manager of Sneakers at eBay. “Launching exclusive drops is one of the ways we continue to deliver an unparalleled experience.”

Indeed, eBay sneakers seems to be going to great lengths to provide the best experience possible for their buyers and sellers; there are zero seller fees for sneakers over $100. Perhaps to an even great end, eBay has partnered with third-party authenticators under the “Authenticity Guarantee” service to inspect and authenticate sneakers over $100, at no fee. Since inception, this service has authenticated over $1 million items and saved sellers more than $17 million in fees, per eBay.

The sneaker experience doesn’t stop there, either. 3D true view technology can provide a 360 view of kicks pre-purchase, a function eBay is in the process of rolling out starting with a handful of sellers November 18.

InsideHook: How did you get started collecting kicks?

DJ Skee: I started collecting shoes as a kid. The original Concord Air Jordan XI was what sparked my obsession. I became obsessed after I went to get the black/red pair after school (when Jordans were still released on Wednesdays), and they were sold out. That drew me into the life of the forever chase of what’s next as a sneakerhead.

Let’s hear it: how many pairs in the collection? What’s the most expensive pair you own? Your favorite? And can we get a holy trinity of sneakers?

DJS: A couple thousand! The most expensive would likely be some of the game-worn or signed pairs I have from MJ, LeBron, Griffey, and 1/1 samples. My favorite trinity: Concord XI, Air Max 90 Infrared, Air Griffey 1.

How did the partnership with eBay come to be? What are you most proud to show off during The Sleigh Drop?

DJS: I’ve been buying and selling on eBay since I was a teenager, so this partnership was a natural one and really is completely full circle for me. I’m super excited to showcase some 1/1 pairs with crazy stories behind them, like original signed Jordan XIs, DJ AM’s Serato AF1s, game-worn NBA Finals LeBrons, game-worn Griffey cleats, my 1/1 Skee Air Force 1’s from Nike, and more.

Obviously, you know a thing or two about buying and selling sneakers. Can we get some pro tips on how to finesse the sneaker game on eBay?

DJS: The real rewards come to those who hunt! Set alerts to be notified for new releases. Also, everyone searches for the same terms, so see if you can get lucky and find hidden gems that may be listed under a different title — I’ve gotten some steals in the past this way!
