If a nature-inspired tech firm can do for smart cars what it did for smartphones, it’ll soon be possible to charge an electric car in fewer minutes than it takes to complete the greatest ab workout of all time.
Israel-based startup StoreDot says it has a next-generation battery made from organic compounds that can fully charge in five minutes and provide an e-car with a range of up to 300 miles.
With an electrode structure that keeps them more stable at high temperatures than traditional lithium-ion batteries, the FlashBatteries charge at a stable rate, so if you only need enough juice to go 60 miles, you only have to charge for one minute. Even better, company CEO Doron Myersdorf says the FlashBattery will be testing by 2017.
“It takes about three years until you can see it on the road in a car, so we are looking at 2020 when consumers will be able to charge in five minutes,” Myersdorf told The Drive. “But even a year before you may be able to take advantage of this infrastructure.”
If you think that sounds like wishful thinking, you’re right, but it’s worth noting that StoreDot has put their money where their mouth is once before, when they engineered a phone battery that offered a full charge in just five minutes.
Now if they could only come up with a five-minute ab workout, they’d really have something.
