The Book Of Sandwich: Steak Edition

7 NYC steak sandwiches that kick ass, take napkins

July 27, 2018 9:00 am

New York: home to $1 pizza slices, chopped cheese and a little something called Gray’s Papaya.

But today we’re looking at a lunching option that skews slightly more refined: the steak sandwich.

Not your bodega’s roast beef. We mean red meat sizzling over an open flame, served piping hot and smothered with the finest of sauces and toppings.

Herewith: a compendium of seven of the tastiest steak sandwiches you’ll find across town.

Pack extra napkins.

Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse
Midtown
While the $94 porterhouse for two is hard to pass up, today we’re talkin’ sammies. Pull up a seat in the El Presidente Suite (aka The Giuliani room) and get ready to mow down a tender, tasty, no-nonsense, piled-high steak sandwich.

Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors
Chelsea
Chances are if you’re here or elsewhere, you’re eating Pat LaFrieda meats anyway. The household name has a lock on the city’s beef market, so why not go straight to the source? For $15, you’re not sinking your teeth into skirt steak. That’s filet mignon, good sir. Also of note, LaFrieda serves an equally wow-inducing black angus number for $15.
2 Pennsylvania Plaza

Harry’s
Financial District
Everything Harry’s touches turns to gold, which here means Hanover steak, caramelized onions and gruyere. Pair it with the best dang martini in town and make a long lunch of it.
1 Hanover Square

Num Pang Sandwich Shop
Chelsea
This one, however, is skirt steak. But it fetches — big time. Just $13 and you’re walkin’ away with a savory, chewy delight. A diversion from traditional steak sammies, Num Pang’s is a traditional Vietnamese favorite dressed with crushed coriander and peppercorns with pickled carrots, cilantro and chili mayo on fresh baked bread.

Jack’s Wife Freda
Greenwich Village
Simple, dainty and carefully constructed, JWF’s sandwiches will make a man look about as prim and proper as he can be while hosing a steak sandwich. Go in for the Prego roll, a Portuguese skirt steak sandwich with garlic butter. And don’t skip the fries. They’re epic.

Yatenga
Harlem
This quaint French bistro bar tucked away in Harlem serves up a mean Steam sammie. It’s grilled hanger with onions, peppers and a fried egg. Very greasy and well worth the jaunt, especially if you’re hungover.

Don Wagyu
Financial District
You only live once. Might as well do it up. The $180 Wagyu steak sandwich has descended upon NYC at new spot Don Wagyu. Their ultra-premium sandwich is the A5 Ozaki, with 5 oz. of prime cut nestled between crustless white bread lightly toasted in steak butter. The price owes to the fact that the beef comes from an out-of-this-world farm in Miyazaki, which only sends five cows to America each month — and they only come here. It’s aged to perfection for 36 months and ready to burn a hole in your pocket. Be forewarned, you’ll probably moan out loud on impact.
