The Fall Style Issue

Prepare to bear down and gird thyselves against the coming onslaught of pumpkin-flavored everything: Fall has arrived.

And with it, our biannual Style Issue, chockablock with the latest and greatest threads to keep you looking more fly than ’86 Jeff Goldblum till spring.

For the uninitiated, it goes something like this:

Eight hero items. I.e., the eight essentials every dapper chap ought to be keeping his eye on at the moment to augment his fall (and winter) sartorial arsenal.

Everything from the coat-of-the-moment to the sneakers you never knew you coveted (you won’t be able to help yourself, trust).

A cold weather staple, corduroy earns personality points for having that textured surface that catches light better than flatter weaves (especially in a hue like burgundy). Even works as a punchy formalwear alternative for the holiday season, provided the wale (see: width of the cord) is thin. Think of it as the Ruffles to the velvet jacket’s Lay’s.

Don’t go tossing your skinny jeans just yet, but those keeping an eye on the fashion-forward crowd will have noticed a move toward a roomier (but still tailored!) pant. The keys: keeping the waist high, the length to a moderate break, and remainder fitted up top. The line between artfully baggy and straight-up sloppy is razor thin, my pedigreed chums – walk it with caution.

Good enough for every stylish British cad in history, good enough for you. Glossy versions are all well and good, but this season go for luxe suede in an off-center color (like this deft mix of brown and burgundy) to let your feet do the talkin’.

70s style is enjoying a resurgence, so now’s the perfect time to add some russet tones to your suiting collection. You’ll soon find that brown is surprisingly versatile and works well when paired with unexpected hues like pink or light blue. Perfect break to the grey/blue/grey/blue monotony.

Didn’t we tell you ’70s style was making a comeback? The key to a turtleneck is to wear it with confidence: reference a few pictures of McQueen in Bullitt to steel your nerves and then go for it. Pick a versatile color like grey, make sure the neck has some height to it (lest you hear Steve Jobs jokes for the rest of the year) and shell out the extra bucks for some cashmere. After all, if you’re gonna swaddle your neck all day, you might as well do it with something luxurious.

There’s a fine line between dressing to stand out and dressing so loud you wake the neighbors.

This was the year that the sneaker journeyed uptown; tops both high and low elevated to new stature via clean, streamlined silhouettes (begone, Yeezy moon boots!) done in supple leathers typically reserved for top-notch dress kicks. Use ’em to lend a sporty look some churched up flavor or a suit some casual flair.

No longer the express domain of the Aspen and Sundace crowds, the shearling coat has been enjoying some rather urbane updates of late — think pieces that’ll play over a double-breasted blazer while still retaining some of that “Why yes, I am in fact wearing a massive piece of animal hide,” Game of Thrones-y swagger.

A good snap-front denim shirt falls directly into a category we affectionately refer to as “overneath.” Works just as well layered over a slouchy tee as it does seated between a henley and shawl collared sweater. And never fear pairing it with denim down below — just make sure you’ve got some contrast between the hues to avoid “Canadian tux” commentary.
