The appeal of quitting your job to live in a van is bifold: some fear an ensuing apocalypse, others just desire a little digital escapism.
Both motivators serve a common purpose: getting off the grid, where no one can find you, hurt you or send you work emails labeled “URGENT” at 3:00 P.M. on a Sunday.
And no capsule will safeguard you from all those dangers quite like this: the EarthRoamer XV-HD, a behemoth, gas-guzzling camper that is pure fantasy on another level, if not for its size (13.5 feet tall, 25 feet long), then for its pricetag: $1.5 million.
Built on a Ford F750 (think dump truck or cherry-picker), the XV-HD is mostly a concept vehicle for a company that makes overlanders of a more realistic size. This thing boasts nearly triple the amount of water and electric for a typical camper: 250 gallons of fresh water, 125 gallons of greywater (showers/toilet) and a 125-gallon tank for waste. It also holds 20,000 hours of electricity and has solar panels with a capacity of 2,100 watt hours.
All of that comes in handy when operating the washer/dryer or any of the other five-star amenities. Then there are the finishes — walnut and granite — similar to what you’d find in a Hatteras yacht. It has a 6.7L V8 turbo diesel engine that delivers 330 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft. of torque, a winch capable of pulling 30,000 pounds, and there’s over a foot of ground clearance.
The only limitation this beast will face? Finding a land tract big enough to park it.
