The inspiration for Leatherman creating a watch line wasn’t inspired by an expert watchmaker or accomplished outdoorsman — it was inspired by Mickey Mouse.
“The idea for the Tread originated on a trip to Disneyland with my family,” Leatherman CEO Ben Rivera recently told Wired. “I was stopped at the gate by security for carrying my Skeletool, which has a blade. I wouldn’t give it up, so I took it all the way back to my hotel room and spent the rest of our trip thinking up ways to carry a multitool with me that would be accepted by security.”
Now that you know the thinking behind it, here’s what to expect from Leatherman’s just-announced first ever timepiece: the Tread Tempo Watch.
Featuring tool-equipped links made from stainless steel, the Swiss-made ticker has a quartz movement that controls the glow-in-the-dark hands. The face rest under a shock- and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal dome.
Of course, the main selling point is the tools located in the nine interchangeable links included with the piece, which consist of screwdrivers, hex drives and square drives. Optional add-ons include box wrenches and pozi drives.
TSA-friendly and water resistant up to 200 meters, the watch comes with a two-year movement warranty, five-year battery warranty and 25-year band warranty.
