There are exceptions, but supermarket steak is not the most enticing food offer.
If you lack access to a quality butcher shop, we suggest taking your carnivore cravings to the web and trying out an online meat purveyor. You can usually get quality cuts within 48 hours, discounts abound (particularly near holidays) and the selection is certainly deeper than what you’d find at your local Kroger’s.
Below, 18 of our favorite online sources to get great steak; the bonus is that most of these online butcher shops also offer up an array of non-beef selections and seafood as well.
Porter Road
The difference with Porter Road? Transparency about where each cut comes from, a lack of middlemen (Porter Road owns their slaughterhouse and distribution center) and working exclusively with local farmers. The cattle are pasture-raised, non-GMO-fed and hormone-free, and the beef is then dry-aged for a minimum of 14 days before shipping out in biodegradable packaging. Porter Road also wins on price (definitely not as eye-raising as some of their competitors) and sheer variety: steaks, “the world’s most perfect burger,” dry-aged hot dogs, pork belly, kielbasa links, chicken, Korean short ribs, lamb T-bones, etc.
New York Prime Beef
The people’s choice winner from our Great Steak Debate dining event/competition in 2017, this Bronx-based beef purveyor dry-ages his steaks for 28 days before they’re hand-picked, custom-cut and then shipped overnight. They’ve also started offering an “All-American Pack,” full of wagyu steaks, hot dogs and hamburgers.
Omaha Steaks
Operating for over 100 years, this family-owned Nebraska staple offers seafood, appetizers and desserts, but their best choice will forever be their “flash frozen” specialty steaks that can be ordered — and gifted — in nearly a dozen cuts, including strip, top sirloin, ribeye and more. They’re currently offering 50% off sitewide.
Crowd Cow
Crowd Cow is a meat purveyor where you can choose cuts from an individual, crowdfunded cow. And members get discounts on some of these rare cuts (e.g. 20% off on Japanese A5 Wagyu Trimmed Brisket Flat) — though there are plenty of everyday options, too.
Good Chop
Good Chop is the most straightforward and simplest meat delivery service we’ve used. The company offers meat (and seafood) with no antibiotics or added hormones and prices that average a bit lower than other services we’ve tried. Basically, pick a “medium” and a “large” box of meat — and your preferred cuts — you’ll get a box delivered every four weeks (unless you pause or cancel it).
Fossil Farms
Farm-raised game and all-natural meats … just maybe not the ones you’re used to (though they have plenty of Angus and wagyu beef options). But if you’re in the mood for emu, bison, kangaroo, well, game on.
Snake River Farms
Used by award-winning chefs across the country, Snake River Farms adopts many aspects of the heritage-steeped Japanese feeding method to produce cuts of meat that are extremely marbled and flavorful (they also claim to have “the largest database on Wagyu in the U.S.”). Free two-day shipping for orders over $249.
Chicago Steak Company
If it’s red, marbled and used to go “moo,” you’ll find it at Chicago Steak Company. Every steak is aged 4-6 weeks and individually numbered and registered to ensure the utmost quality. Don’t sleep on “Coach Ditka’s Favorites,” a collection of premium meats handpicked by Iron Mike himself.
Goldbelly
This company is best known for partnering with famous restaurants nationwide to deliver customers their favorite dishes. But they also offer up high-end steaks (Niman Ranch, Pat LaFrieda, etc.) and other meats from big-name butchers and suppliers.
Allen Brothers
These steak purveyors have been providing USDA prime beef to restaurants and consumers since 1893. But they also deal in veal, poultry, seafood and lamb.
Perini Ranch
If you’re craving just a great cut of meat, this Texas restaurant ships their Mesquite Smoked Peppered Beef Tenderloin overnight — and it’ll feed 6-8 people.
Meat N’ Bone
This Miami-based purveyor is all about choice: 20 types of ribeye? Done. Five different types of Picanha? Sure. More than one type of alcohol-infused steaks? Actually, yes!
ButcherBox
This carnivore-friendly subscription service has a strict adherence to 100% grass-fed beef and often makes temptation-worthy offers like “free bacon for life.” And you can choose what goes in your order and the delivery frequency (free shipping, too).
D’Artagnan
D’Artagnan partners with small farms and ranches that never use hormones or antibiotics and are all committed to free-range production and humane farming practices. Plus, you can pair their choice cuts with a selection of charcuterie, foie gras and fresh truffles.
Market House
The idea here is that you can not only grab the best in beef, but also seafood. The steaks here include grass-fed, non-GMO and organic options while the seafood is wild-caught and flash frozen for freshness. Plus, MH has one of the better recipe/prep blogs we’ve seen on a food site.
Grass Roots
This farmers’ cooperative practices regenerative farming and offers an interesting selection of steak cuts (e.g. Bavette, a muscular piece of meat from the belly) along with plenty of unusual offerings (offal and bones).
Harry & David
The gifting giant opened a Fine Meats department recently, and they offer up an array of ribeyes, flank steaks and tomahawks, along with specialties (like bacon-wrapped filet mignon). And two-day shipping is often thrown in for free.
Holy Grail Steak Company
The idea here? Try everything with a variety of fancy meat flights. Selections include steaks, chops, and other cuts from their Japanese Wagyu, American Wagyu, Upper Prime and Carrot-Fed Beef collections. Holy Grail was also the first purveyor in the U.S. to offer authentic Ogata Farm Maezawa beef.
