While almost none us will develop a case of mechanophilia (sexual attraction to a machine like a motor vehicle) to the extent that we’d have conjugal relations with a Porsche, there’s no doubt that humans develop strong attachments to their cars.
But according to an analysis by iSeeCars of how long it takes owners to get rid of a new car, not all those attachments are created equal. After looking at sales records for more than 15.7 million used vehicles, while the average period of ownership for a new car is 7.3 years, certain models usually exceed that.

As you can see, the list comprises four sports cars, two Ford SUVs one Toyota sedan and three Toyota SUVs. Unsurprisingly enough, four of those cars (the Expedition, 4Runner, Sequoia and Avalon) also made the cut for the best bets to hit 200,000 miles.
“These vehicles tend to log high miles and take a beating,” iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly said of the SUVs on the list. “Parents who keep these cars longer probably aren’t ready to replace them until their kids get older and they know their new car won’t get destroyed.”
It’s like they say: if you really love something, let it go — but only after your kids beat the hell out of it.
