There was a period a few years ago when Fred Savage — who’d first made his name as the child star at the center of The Wonder Years in the 1980s — began to get noticed for his work as a director of television comedies like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Party Down. As second acts in life go, it seemed like a pretty solid one at the time.
That’s the trouble with second acts, though. Sometimes there’s a twist you don’t see coming.
On Friday night, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Savage had been fired from the reboot of The Wonder Years, on which he had been an executive producer and director. The firing came in the wake of an investigation of Savage’s conduct on the set of the show — which involved three different allegations of misconduct.
A statement from 20th Television summarized the process they took and the studio’s actions: “Recently, we were made aware of allegations of inappropriate conduct by Fred Savage, and as is policy, an investigation was launched. Upon its completion, the decision was made to terminate his employment as an executive producer and director of The Wonder Years.”
Savage joins a number of other high-profile industry figures who have been fired over inappropriate conduct on film and television sets, including actor Frank Langella and showrunner David Hollander.
