Over the course of six seasons, we’ve seen some truly unexpected celebrities unmasked on The Masked Singer. No matter who it is, the singing competition’s judges usually roll with it, smiling and cheering them on as they perform one last time — sans the costume that had previously obscured their identity — after being eliminated from the show. But a recent unmasking during the show’s forthcoming seventh season reportedly elicited a slightly different reponse.
According to Deadline, judges Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke walked off the show’s set in protest after former New York City mayor and disgraced Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani was unmasked during last week’s taping of the Season 7 premiere. (They didn’t reveal which character Giuliani was dressed as or what he sang to avoid spoiling the new season, which has yet to air.)
“While Jeong and Thicke exited (they eventually returned), fellow judges Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger remained onstage,” the publication reports. “They bantered with Giuliani, a controversial figure for pressing what is widely derided as a baseless claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from his client Donald Trump.”
Of course, it’s interesting that Giuliani is a bridge too far for Jeong and Thicke when they’ve previously been seemingly fine with the show’s inclusion of other controversial contestants like Sarah Palin, Bobby Brown and Logan Paul. In fact, The Masked Singer has become a reputation-laundering scheme for celebrities who are desperate to rehab their image. Is Palin singing “Baby Got Back” while dressed as a teddy bear more acceptable to the judges than Giuliani getting up there and doing whatever he did? Or is he the straw that finally broke the camel’s back?
