Prior to the finale of NCAA football, ESPN is introducing a rookie condiment onto the national stage.
In advance of Alabama taking on Georgia in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday in Indianapolis, the Worldwide Leader has announced the debut of a custom spice blend that attempts to blend the power of postseason football with the intense flavors fans seek in their tailgating or pregame cooking.
Appropriately dubbed Postseasoning and not suggested for fans of teams with sub-.500 records, the new blend consists of salt, onion, gochugaru, garlic, paprika, black pepper and cayenne. “This mixture of culinary victory and umami is forged from the impassioned spirit of postseason football competition,” per ESPN. “Why? Because as the gridiron play heats up, your food should, too. Don’t you agree? What a ridiculous question. Of course you do. The great Roman playwright Plautus once said, ‘Spice a dish with love and it pleases every palate.’ We concur. So, project your football fandom onto your game day spread and give your face a mouth touchdown with Postseasoning!”
Though Postseasoning is presently available for sale, more than 10,000 bottles of the blend will be given out at postseason games throughout the rest of the football calendar year, including in Indianapolis ahead of the CFB National Championship.
“Serving fans is what drives us, and Postseasoning is an unexpected, but truthful way to tap into our mission,” said ESPN sports marketing senior director Curtis Friends. “The football postseason is when everything is elevated, so it made sense for ESPN to help people elevate their fandom in one of its most powerful expressions: food.”
In collaboration with the release, ESPN has collaborated with 2018 James Beard Award winner Rodney Scott of Whole Hog BBQ in Charleston, South Carolina. Scott, the author of Rodney Scott’s World of BBQ and the winner for Best Chef in the Southeast in 2018, has a quartet of recipes that highlight the seasoning, including Scott’s take on deviled eggs. “Whether you’re on the field or at the tailgate, as a huge football fan, I know that the postseason is the time where we all need to up our game,” Scott said. “I am excited to help ESPN in their mission to serve sports fans by creating recipes, tips and tricks on using Postseasoning.”
