Last year, Porsche made an announcement that piqued the interest of many fans of endurance racing: the automaker would return to 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023. At the time, details were sparse about what Porsche was planning to do, save that they’d be competing in the FIA’s LMDh category — that’s Le Mans Daytona h — a new hypercar class of the announced in 2020.
Now we know a bit more about Porsche’s plans. As Autoblog notes, Porsche released some details and some very specific photos of its prototypes, with more to follow next year. Ronan Glon observes that this prototype shares a hybrid status with the Porsche 919, but that the design elements revealed so far suggest a divergent approach between the two vehicles.
Porsche’s own announcement reveals a bit more, including the fact that the prototype will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. “In January, we will begin intensive testing to ensure that we are optimally prepared for our 2023 competition debut,” said Thomas Laudenbach of Porsche Motorsports.
We’ll know a lot more about the new LMDh next year — all the better to build anticipation for what promises to be a long-awaited return to some of the auto world’s most storied competitions.
