If you want something done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself.
That’s what Colorado Teardrops founder Dean Wiltshire was thinking in 2014 when he created the company after failing find a suitable trailer to rent or buy.
Since then, Wiltshire’s Boulder-based business has been cranking out rugged teardrop trailers, the latest of which is a line of all-aluminum models topped off by the 1,630-pound Summit trailer bed.
With enough space to sleep two kids and two adults inside its insulated cabin, the lightweight Summit has a reinforced roof that can support up to 1,500 pounds and sleep extra campers. The rust-resistant aluminum construction means the Summit can hold up to the elements better than plywood models and its 35” BF Goodrich off-road tires add to the trailer’s tough exterior.
“We want it to be like the old Airstream behind the barn — strong bones, resistant to weather, yet a light, flexible teardrop platform that most vehicles can tow,” Wiltshire told GearJunkie.
Upgrade options include solar panels, a galley with a stove and cooler and an electric power package.
Point being, the Summit’s reasonable $21,500 base price is just a jumping off point to a life on the off-road.
