There are some creative collaborations that you might not have seen coming, but which make a lot of sense in retrospect. Take Lil Nas X and MSCHF, for instance. You may recall MSCHF as the same group who bought a Damien Hirst painting, chopped it into smaller pieces, and then resold them individually. Lil Nas X, meanwhile, just released a new single, “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).” At Pitchfork, Evan Minsker described its video thusly: “It shows Eve making out with the snake, a pole dancer seducing the devil, and a prisoner shackled by people in Regency-era wigs. Nearly everyone described just there is portrayed in the visual by Lil Nas X.”
And thus, the two converged and created a pair of shoes. Devil-themed shoes, to be even more specific. Devil-themed shoes made with human blood.
Writing at The New York Times, Bryan Pietsch chronicled the announcement of Satan Shoes and the ensuing controversy. In case you were wondering, the blood came from MSCHF staffers; the shoes are modified Nike Air Max 97s. 666 pairs of shoes were made, and they’ll be going on sale on Monday for $1,018. The Satan Shoes were designed as a companion piece to MSCHF’s earlier Jesus Shoes, the making of which incorporated holy water.
Following a (predictable) outcry from various conservative politicians, Lil Nas X replied on Twitter on Sunday night with some truly next-level trolling:
Nike distanced themselves from this endeavor. “We do not have a relationship with Little Nas X or MSCHF,” the company said in a statement. “Nike did not design or release these shoes, and we do not endorse them.” For potential buyers, though, that’s unlikely to matter — the article notes that the Satan Shoes are almost certain to sell out.
