On Sunday night, Brandi Carlile wowed at the Grammys with a moving rendition of John Prine’s “I Remember Everything,” the late singer-songwriter’s final song, for which he took home two posthumous awards (Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance). And now Prine’s label Oh Boy Records has shared a studio version of Carlile’s cover and announced a forthcoming tribute album to honor him.
Carlile’s interpretation of “I Remember Everything” will be included on Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows Vol. 2, which will feature artists covering their favorite songs by Prine, who died of COVID-19 complications in April 2020.
“John Prine is a hero and one of the most important and significant songwriters of our time,” Carlile said in a statement about the project. “I feel so lucky to have called him a friend. It was an absolute honor of my life to pay tribute to him on the Grammy stage. His songs will live forever.”
The first Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine album was released in 2010 and featured covers by Justin Vernon, My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst, Drive-By Truckers, Justin Townes Earle, The Avett Brothers, Deer Tick, Old Crow Medicine Show and more.
There’s not much information available yet about Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows Vol. 2, other than it will be released sometime this fall. (You can pre-order it here.) In the meantime, check out Carlile’s “I Remember Everything” cover below.
