It’s been 25 years since Happy Gilmore hit the green with his hockey stick, and to celebrate the occasion, Adam Sandler took to social media with a special video revisiting the iconic character.
“Happy loves you all! Thanks for everything!” Sandler captioned the video, which features him showing off Gilmore’s signature slapshot-inspired swing for the first time in a quarter century.
“It’s been 25 years since I’ve done this,” he says in the video. “Let’s see what happens. I’m scared. Shooter McGavin, this is for you.” After crushing the ball on an empty golf course, he made another reference to his onscreen nemesis, adding, “I’m not lying to you, that was smashed. That went pretty well. You’re dead, Shooter!”
Naturally, Shooter McGavin (played by actor Christopher McDonald) had to respond. McDonald posted a video of his own, in character as McGavin, talking a little trash while putting a ball into a glass in his living room. “Nice drive, Gilmore,” he says. “Twenty-five years, huh? Let’s see if it’s Shooter’s tour. Check it out. Oh yeah. It’s all about the short game.”
After sinking the putt and declaring that “Shooter’s still got it,” McDonald thanked Sandler and the fans for 25 years of support before slipping back into character. “Why don’t you just meet me at the ninth green at nine Gilmore … a little secret of the pros,” he said. “Oh, and Gilmore, wear something nice. Twenty-fifth anniversary, baby. Shooter, out!”
Sandler and McDonald weren’t the only ones to commemorate Happy Gilmore‘s 25th anniversary on Tuesday, however. The PGA Tour paid tribute to the golf movie by tweeting out a compilation video of pro golfers like Jordan Spieth as well as celebs like Ray Romano and Justin Timberlake trying their hands at Happy’s iconic swing and uttering their favorite quotes from the movie.
