Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is joining the ranks of Elton John, Jerry Garica and Will Ferrell’s Anchorman character Ron Burgundy by getting a permanent ice cream flavor named for him from Ben & Jerry’s.

To honor Kaepernick’s courageous work to confront systemic oppression and stop police violence against people of color, the Vermont-based ice cream company is launching “Change the Whirled.”

Like Kaepernick, the non-dairy frozen dessert is vegan, and it features a caramel sunflower butter base with fudge chips, graham cracker swirls and chocolate cookie swirls.

“I’m honored to partner with Ben & Jerry’s on Change the Whirled. Their commitment to challenging the anti-Black roots of policing in the United States demonstrates a material concern for the well-being of Black and Brown communities,” Kaepernick said in a statement. “My hope is that this partnership will amplify calls to defund and abolish the police and to invest in futures that can make us safer, healthier, and truly free.”

Kaepernick’s portion of the proceeds from sales of Change the Whirled will support the work of Know Your Rights Camp, an organization he founded in Oakland in 2016 to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities.

“This is a full-time flavor … delicious ice cream, with a joyful packaging that honors a man whose words and actions have love rooted in it,” Ben & Jerry’s global head of marketing Jay Curley told Fast Company. “Do we expect this to change everyone’s mind? Of course not. But it can open up conversations and, to a degree, challenge people’s thinking and spread the actual message Colin is talking about and the work Know Your Rights Foundation is working on.”

Look for the flavor to hit freezers starting in 2021.
