Though he’s new to the Dallas Cowboys organization, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is already taking a shot at the NFL’s most prominent owner. McCoy went on ESPN’s First Take on Friday to talk about Jerry Jones and his silence regarding the death of George Floyd, as well as the ongoing protests against racial injustice and police brutality, and he did not mince words.
"When things are not going well for the team, you can hear him screaming. Well, this is life. This is bigger than just football; it’s bigger than money; it’s bigger than winning a Super Bowl. And something needs to be said."

McCoy emphasized that the current moment is “bigger than football,” and that it’s jarring to see Jones stay quiet, considering he is the most vocal owner in the NFL when it comes to league issues:
We need him to speak up about life. This is about human beings and equal rights. And that’s not what’s happening. And it would be great to hear him say something. Anything.
The new Cowboys star’s comments come after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, a statement that has not been publicly supported by any of the league’s owners. While the league previously barred players from kneeling during the anthem, it appears the tides have shifted on that, in light of the current moment.
Jones’s stance on the anthem protests is well-known; in 2018, he said that the team’s policy was for everyone to stand for the anthem, and that he believed the protests were disrespecting the flag, despite that not being any of the players’ intentions. It’s unknown how he feels about the current protests, but McCoy is right that Jones’s silence is deafening on an issue that he has previously been vocal about, albeit not in the way that supporters of the protests and the Black Lives Matter movement appreciated.
