Astute viewers of the streaming service Disney+ noticed something different when the 1984 comedy Splash arrived on the service.
Daryl Hannah’s butt got covered by some iffy CGI work, as noted by Variety.
The original film, which also starred Tom Hanks, was rated PG for nudity — a “non-sexual nudity” that was essential to the plot, according to the film database IMDB. No surprise, given that the film is literally a fish-out-of-water tale about a mermaid (a mythical creature that, nonetheless, isn’t known for wearing clothes underwater).
The scene in question features Madison (Hannah) running into the ocean. The very bad CGI has been used to extend her hair. Another nude butt scene at the Statue of Liberty has been blurred.
Allison Pregler, the host of YouTube film series Movie Nights, notes on Twitter that Disney+ “didn’t want butts on their platform so they edited Splash with digital fur technology,” an allusion to the recent CGI debacle Cats.

The streaming service does note in the beginning of the film that the movie has been edited for content. When the service launched, it had taken a few older titles out of circulation but had kept other movies and cartoons intact with warnings at the beginning.
