Recently, prior to the institution of the social distancing measures we’ve all adopted to help decelerate the spread of COVID-19, your correspondent had the opportunity to pop into a Reiss store in downtown New York. The British brand has long been a favorite of mine, and one that I find to be criminally underappreciated in the American menswear scene considering the consistently solid collections they turn out season after season.
Pedro Tipped Melange Polo
Perusing the racks, I picked up a knit polo the color of a robin’s egg and thought to myself “damn, that’s a stylish shirt.” Then I turned and saw another, equally stylish polo. And then another. And another. And another. Each unique, but all sporting a very ‘60s, “Don Draper goes to Italy” vibe that I think every gent’s closet could use a little more of.

This happens every now and again — a menswear brand will release a collection in which they just nail a certain category. For Reiss, that lightning in a bottle is this spring’s knitwear. Want an artful mix of texture and stripes? They got you. Bold color-blocking with some snazzy white piping? No problem. Want to swing for the sartorial bleachers with full floral embroidery down your front? Step right up. You can’t throw a rock in this collection without hitting a shirt you’re guaranteed to get compliments in.

Now, am I aware that it seems a little silly to be writing about polo shirts at a time like this? Of course I am. But I’m also pretty sick of global pandemic occupying my every waking thought, and thus I am going to head over to Reiss’s site, order a couple shirts and daydream of a time when the crisis has subsided and the beaches and bars of Portofino are once again open and filled with the exquisite music that is Italians arguing with one another. They’ll need our business more than ever, and I for one will be happy to oblige, with a Negroni in hand and a stylin’ shirt on my back.
