If you bought a new Honda Accord 20 years ago and it’s still in A) working shape and B) your garage, go buy a lottery ticket.
Because you’re beating the odds.
The ‘96 Accord was the most stolen car in America last year, and the model is almost always at or near the top of the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s annual Hot Wheels Report. While Honda Civics are also popular with thieves, only the Accord eclipsed 50,000 thefts in 2015 (52,244).
Part of the reason for the high theft rate has to do with supply (Honda built more than 10 million Accords in the U.S. between 1983 and 2013 according to a spokesperson), but it also owes to demand — not for the cars themselves, but for the parts they contain. Models from different years often have interchangeable parts, and car thieves can get up to triple the usual value of an Accord if they sell it for parts, LoJack VP Patrick Clancy told ABC News.
