The man who told us to keep on rockin’ in the free world is now officially a citizen of the land of the free and the home of the brave.
According to his website, Canadian Neil Young has been granted his U.S. citizenship and will be voting in the 2020 presidential election.
Accompanied by his wife Daryl Hannah, Young went to the Los Angeles Convention Center for his Oath Ceremony and left with his naturalization documents on Wednesday, TMZ reported.
Afterward, Young shared the development on social media.
In November of last year, the singer-songwriter shared the details of his citizenship application process and told fans that it had been held up because he uses marijuana.
“When I recently applied for American citizenship, I passed the test. It was a conversation where I was asked many questions. I answered them truthfully and passed,” Young wrote in a statement on his Neil Young Archives website. “Recently however, I have been told that I must do another test, due to my use of marijuana and how some people who smoke it have exhibited a problem.”
Prior to obtaining his citizenship this week, Young explained why he wanted to vote in the States in an interview with Los Angeles Times. “I live down here; I pay taxes down here; my beautiful family is all down here — they’re all Americans, so I want to register my opinion,” he said.
An outspoken critic of U.S. politics and President Trump, Young will almost certainly be voting for the Democratic candidate in 2020.
