Aston Martin to Build Production Vehicle That Can Beat an F1 Racer

The AM RB 001 can hit over 200 MPH — and it’s street legal

“Hypercars.”

Closely associated with eye-catching designs, power-packing V-12s and sub-two-second 0-60 times, it’s a moniker reserved for only the fastest production-line vehicles on earth, many of them so absurdly fast they can only be driven on a racetrack.

But that is not the case with the world’s newest hypercar, the AM RB 001, a street-legal joint creation from Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing that boasts a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio (HP to kilograms) and is rumored to be faster than the McLaren F1 (top speed 241 MPH).

Built with input from the world’s most successful Formula 1 designer, Adrian Newey, the carbon fiber AM-RB 001 is completely road legal.

The two-seater features a naturally aspirated V12 that intakes air via atmospheric pressure rather than forced induction, a clean-sheet gearbox and a suspension system designed to deal with aerodynamic loading at extremely high speed. The car’s exact specs have yet to be released, but 1,000 HP does not seem out of the question.

“I’ve always been adamant that the AM-RB 001 should be a true road car that’s also capable of extreme performance on track, and this means it really has to be a car of two characters,” said Newey. “That’s the secret we’re trying to put into this car — the technology that allows it to be docile and comfortable, but with immense outright capabilities.”

Since the companies only plan to build 150 of the cars (with prices ranging from $2.6–$3.9 million) you probably won’t be able to get one … although this daily McLaren P1 driver might.
