Google Wants to Pay You to Sit in a Self-Driving Car All Day

Clean driving record required. I Spy skills a plus.

Do you enjoy sitting at your desk for six to eight hours, but wish your desk was in constant motion? Do you long to be a professional driver, but prefer passive engagement? Do you have a Bachelor’s degree in basically anything at all?

Then this job is for you.

Google is offering Arizona-based positions to “drive” one of their autonomous vehicles for 6-8 hours, five days a week, for $20 an hour with contracts lasting between 12 to 24 months.

But you won’t be napping or playing chess while driving. The self-driving car industry has gotten a fair amount of heat lately and active humans are still very much needed to test out the tech. Drivers will be expected to stay constantly alert and focused while providing the engineering team with concise written and oral feedback.

Included among the application requirements: holding a Bachelor’s degree (specified in no particular arena), being able to type 40 words per minute, having zero criminal history, a sparkling clean driving record and, regardless of the car’s capabilities, excellent driving skills.

Each vehicle will be outfitted with two operators: one in the driver seat ready to take over in case of any unforeseen hazardous incident and one passenger to monitor the car’s program systems and consistently file reports on the car’s performance.

Local drivers are preferred, but the program is already set to expand to Austin, Texas, Kirkland, Washington and Mountain View, California.
