Bears fans couldn’t help feel some deja vu on Sunday (Oct. 27) after losing 17-16 to the Los Angeles Chargers after a missed field goal. The heartbreaking kick, which would have won the game for the Monsters of the Midway in the final seconds had it been successful, brought back all sorts of bad memories of Cody Parkey’s infamous double doink in last season’s playoffs.

This time it was kicker Eddie Pineiro who missed. Pineiro ran into trouble early, doinking his first attempt of the game off the upright, but he went on to make three field goals throughout the day. But his most crucial attempt, from 41 yards with 40 seconds remaining in the game, veered to the left, causing the Bears to fall to 3-4 on the season.

After the game, head coach Matt Nagy defended his decision to have Mitchell Trubisky kneel instead of calling another play. “I’ll just be brutally clear,” he told reporters. “Zero thought of throwing the football. Zero thought of running the football. You understand me? That’s exactly what it was. It’s as simple as that.”

After his two misses Sunday, Pineiro is 12 of 15 on the season in field goal attempts. “I have ultimate faith in him,” Nagy said. “I do. It just happens to be in our situation it gets completely magnified because of where we’ve been before, but I have ultimate trust in him.”
