The newest class of New York City firefighters includes 13 children of first responders who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) training academy celebrated 301 new graduates on Tuesday, 13 of whom are the children of firefighters who died at the World Trade Center on 9/11, ABC reported. Six more new grads are children of first responders who later died of 9/11-related illnesses.
According to Fire Commissioner Dan Nigro, this class features an unprecedented number of children of 9/11 victims.
They are honoring their fallen loved ones,” said Nigro. “They are continuing their family’s legacy of service and they are making all of us immensely proud.”

The 13 new 9/11 legacy grads include 12 men and one woman, the New York Post reported earlier this month.
“Bravery runs in these extraordinary families who have sacrificed so much for our city. I’m proud of the commitment these probies have already demonstrated to the department and look forward to celebrating with them at their graduation,” Nigro told the Post ahead of the 18th anniversary of the September 11 tragedy.
“These legacies are no longer children dreaming of the careers their fathers loved and of serving in the world’s greatest fire department,” Nigro told ABC following Tuesday’s graduation. “Today, they fully achieved their dreams.”
