Before today, most people didn’t know Chanel Miller’s name, but she’s been at the center of one the nation’s most highly publicized sexual assault cases for years. Known as Emily Doe throughout the Stanford University case in which Brock Turner was convicted of her assault, Miller has finally introduced herself to the public under her real name.
Miller’s name was revealed in a New York Times article published Wednesday ahead of the release of her new memoir, Know My Name. The memoir traces her experiences in the aftermath of the 2015 assault, for which Turner served a notoriously brief sentence. Miller, under the name Emily Doe, first made headlines back in 2016 when BuzzFeed published the powerful 7,000-word statement she read at Turner’s sentencing.
The case sparked massive backlash after Turner, who was found guilty of three counts of felony sexual assault, served only three months of an already brief six month sentence. While Miller’s case predated the advent of the #MeToo movement, her statement and the sentence have remained an important force in the ongoing conversation surrounding sexual misconduct and misogyny in America.
According to the New York Times, Miller began working on the book in 2017, with the increasingly intense cultural climate surrounding sexual violence shaping her story throughout the process.
“It is one of the most important books that I’ve ever published,” said Andrea Schulz, the editor in chief of Viking, the book’s publisher. Schultz told the Times that the book has the potential to “change the culture that we live in and the assumptions we make about what survivors should be expected to go through to get justice.”
Know My Name is scheduled to be released September 24.
